Senna Leaf (Cassia angustifolia), also known as C. senna, is a small shrub belonging to the legume family Cassia. Its leaves and seeds are commonly used in cosmetics. The properties of C. auriculata, another plant from the same family and genus, are similar, and their leaf extracts are also utilized in cosmetics. Senna Leaf Extract contains anthraquinone compounds, particularly sennoside and its derivatives, which are the characteristic components of this extract. It also contains rhein, chrysophanol, and its glucoside, as well as trace amounts of aloe-emodin or emodin glucoside. Other components found in Senna Leaf Extract include phytosterols like β-sitosterol and stigmasterol, flavonoids such as kaempferol-3-rutinoside, and triterpenoid saponins like α-aromatic resin alcohol. The other two types of senna also utilize sennoside as their main component.
