Overview
Licorice Extract (Glycyrrhiza Uralensis) and Glycyrrhiza inflata extract (C. inflata) are extracts from the roots of the legume licorice root. Licorice Extract has been used medicinally for highly effective coughs and as a mild laxative. It promotes the ejection of mucus or exudate from the lungs, bronchi, and trachea; sometimes extended to antitussives. Glycyrrhetinic acid has a corticosteroid-like structure, thus is useful as an anti-inflammatory and co-emulsifier to treat skin disorders and in cosmetics. Licorice root extract is used as a foaming agent in beers and fire extinguishers. Most commonly, however, Licorice extract is used as a flavoring agent to sweeten cigarettes, cigars, and pipe tobacco.

Active ingredients
The main chemical components of licorice extract are triterpenoids and flavonoids. There are also a small number of alkaloids, lignin, coumarin, and a variety of amino acids.
Triterpenoids include glycyrrhizic acid and glycyrrhetinic acid. The content of glycyrrhizic acid is as high as 6% to 14%; flavonoids include dihydroflavonoids glycyrrhizin and liquiritin, chalcones (Isoliquiritigenin and isoliquiritin), and so on.
Extraction processing method
Licorice can be extracted with water, alcohol, 1,3-butanediol, etc. as a solvent, followed by conventional methods, and finally concentrated into a paste. For extraction with boiling water, the yield is about 10%; for extraction with 80% alcohol, the yield is about 8%.
Pharmacology
Licorice extract has antibacterial properties. The 50% alcohol extract of licorice has an obvious inhibitory effect on Staphylococcus aureus related to skin diseases; it has anti-periodontitis pathogens such as Porphyromonas gingivalis and Porphyromonas pulposus The MIC values of, Prevotella intermedia, anaerobic bacteria, and Actinobacillus actinobacteria are all 1%-2%.
There are 3 acute inflammation models in mice with licorice decoction p-xylene-induced ear swelling, egg white-induced foot swelling, and acetic acid-induced increase in the permeability of capillaries in the abdominal cavity of mice.
As well as the early inflammation exudation and edema of the rat granuloma chronic inflammation model induced by cotton ball, it has an obvious inhibitory effect, so the anti-inflammatory effect is good.
Application in cosmetics&skin care products
Researches on the proliferation of licorice extract on muscle cells, the promotion of vascular endothelial cell proliferation, the promotion of collagen-4 production, the inhibition of NO production, etc., has shown that licorice extract promotes skin activity, etc. It can be used in anti-aging cosmetics; the extract can still be used as a skin whitening agent, anti-inflammatory agent, and weight loss agent.
