Active ingredients

Benzoic acid, cinnamic acid, vanillin, benzaldehyde, and several esters of benzoic acid and cinnamic acid. The ingredients of Benzoin from Vietnam are slightly different. Benzoin also contains methyl rohanolin, rohanolin glycoside, eugenol glucoside, and other non-volatile components.

Extraction processing method

Benzoin resin can be extracted by conventional methods, such as water and alcohol, and then concentrated to dryness. If impregnated with 30% alcohol at room temperature, the yield was 2.5%.

Pharmacology

Benzoin or its extracts have broad-spectrum inhibitory effect on bacteria and molds, such as Staphylococcus aureus, in vitro tests.

• Promotion of proliferation of B-16 melanocytes;
• Promote tyrosinase activity;
• Promote the decomposition of subcutaneous white adipocytes in mice;
• Inhibits the production of interleukin-4 in cell culture;
• Promotion of hair growth in mice;

Application in cosmetics&skin care products

Benzoin and Vietnamese benzoin resin are commonly used as incense materials. When used in low concentration, the extract can be used as a skin tanning and darkening agent, but when used in high concentration, it has a whitening effect on the skin.  Also be used as an antibacterial agent, anti-inflammatory agent, hair agent, and weight loss agent.
